Venetian-Style Doughnuts

  • Vegetable oil for deep frying
  • 2 cups biscuit and baking mix
  • ½ cup cold water
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup golden raisins
  • 1 ½ Tbsp. anise or rum
  • ½ cup pine nuts
  • ½ cup chopped mixed candied peel
  • Grated zest of 1 lemon
  • ¼ cup powdered sugar


In deep fryer or 4-quart heavy saucepan, heat oil to 350°F. Combine baking mix, water, egg, sugar, anise or rum, pine nuts, candied peel, golden raisins and lemon zest in large bowl. Working in batches, drop batter by tablespoonfuls into hot oil. Cook 2 to 3 minutes, turning occasionally, or until golden brown. Use a metal slotted spoon to remove doughnuts from oil; drain on paper towels and dust with powdered sugar.
